Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) is a service institute of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) that is principally mandated to mitigate disasters that may arise from volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunami and other related geotectonic phenomena.
The violent eruption and the resulting casualties and damages from Hibok-hibok Volcano in 1951 made the nation realize the necessity to seriously monitor and conduct studies on active volcanoes in the country. As there was no government agency at that time that is in-charge of this task, the Commission on Volcanology (COMVOL) was created in June 20, 1952 through Republic Act No. 766, primarily to “safeguard life and property against volcanic eruptions and its dangers.” COMVOL was initially placed under the Executive Board of the National Research Council and later under the National Science Development Board (NSDB).
On 17 March, 1982, Executive Order 784 reorganized the NSDB and its agencies into the National Science and Technology Authority (NSTA). COMVOL was restructured and renamed Philippine Institute of Volcanology (PHIVOLC).
On September 17, 1984, seismology or the science that deals with earthquakes, was transferred to the Institute from Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA). PHIVOLC was renamed Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).
On January 30, 1987, by virtue of Executive Order No. 128, the NSTA was structurally and functionally transformed into the Department of Science and Technology. PHIVOLCS was granted its present mandates.PHIVOLCS Building, C.P. Garcia Avenue, U.P. Campus, Diliman

PT Asuransi MAIPARK Indonesia
Deregulation of the financial sector in the late 1980’s led to a drop of premium rates in Indonesia to levels similar to countries without catastrophe risk exposure. Due to excessive competition it became market practice to provide earthquake insurance without charging risk adequate premiums. There was increasing concern whether insurers could meet their obligations towards policyholders in the event of a large earthquake impacting one of the major metropolitan or economically and industrially vital provincial areas.
In response to the above situation and via a succession of administrative and regulatory directives, the government required all licensed general insurance and reinsurance companies operating in Indonesia to cooperate in insuring special risks through a joint undertaking of all companies. The vehicle for this undertaking was the Indonesian Earthquake Reinsurance Pool or Pool Reasuransi Gempa Bumi Indonesia (PRGBI). Participating in the Earthquake Pool was made compulsory for all general insurance and reinsurance companies. The PRGBI began operations from 1st January 2003. At the same time a compulsory earthquake tariff was introduced and endorsed by the government. With effect from 1st January 2004 the PRGBI was transformed into a public liability company, PT. Asuransi MAIPARK Indonesia.
MAIPARK is an abbreviation for Maskapai Asuransi Indonesia (MAI) and Perusahan Asuransi Risiko Khusus (PARK). MAI was the oldest General Insurance Company in Indonesia and its license was purchased by 32 founding shareholders on 23rd December 2003 at a General Shareholder Meeting.
Natural catastrophes cause numerous human lives and significant property damage each year. The scale of economic losses is constantly increasing due to population growth and value concentration of sensitive technology in potentially risk exposed areas.Multivision Tower 8th Floor,

International Council For Science
ICSU was founded in 1931 to promote international scientific activity in the different branches of science and its application for the benefit of humanity. It is one of the oldest non-governmental organizations in the world and represents the evolution and expansion of two earlier bodies known as the International Association of Academies (IAA; 1899-1914) and the International Research Council (IRC; 1919-1931).
ICSU’s strength and uniqueness lies in its dual membership of National Scientific Members and International Scientific Unions. The wide spectrum of scientific expertise in the membership, allows ICSU to address major, international, interdisciplinary issues which its Members could not handle alone.
ICSU seeks to accomplish its role in a number of ways. Over the years, it has addressed specific global issues through the creation of Interdisciplinary Bodies, and of Joint Initiatives in partnership with other organizations. Important programmes of the past include the International Polar Year (2007-08), International Geophysical Year (1957-58) and the International Biological Programme (1964-74). Major current programmes include the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP), the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), DIVERSITAS: An International Programme of Biodiversity Science and the International Human Dimensions Programme on Global Environmental Change (IHDP).ICSU Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific
